Meet the Decathletes: Greg Stripe

1. Please tell us the name of your firm, title, and describe your role in one sentence. I work at Lord Abbett which is a privately held mutual fund company. The title of my position is “Regional Consultant”. Another way to describe this role would be to say that I am an internal wholesaler.

2. What are your fundraising and athletic goals for The Decathlon, and what led you to choose them? Success will be defined by the amount of money I fundraise and how I perform in the Decathlon. If I am able to raise well over $4,000 and place in the top 10 of the individual competition, I will feel successful. My main goal for this year is to place in the top 5 of the individual competition. I would also like to put up over 20 reps for the bench press.

3. On average, a Decathlete receives donations from 34 supporters. What fundraising technique(s) have worked best for you that you would recommend to first-time participants? My best technique for fundraising is to simply send an email to anyone I know who I think would support me. I typically target family members, friends, neighbors and work colleagues initially for donations. Also, it helps to walk the individual through the website donation process step by step through the email. As simple as it may sound, I always get a bunch of questions.

4. Most Decathletes have participated in mud runs, 5k’s, and triathlons. What differentiates The Wall Street Decathlon experience from those other events? I've never tried triathlons or 5Ks, but The Wall Street Decathlon seems to be more organized compared the mud runs. Also, there is much more of an emphasis on charity fundraising than any other event I have experienced.

5. What’s the one piece of advice about The Decathlon that you’d share with first-time participants? I would tell first time participants to not take training lightly, but at the same time to watch out for injuries. The last thing you would want to do is hurt yourself before June 14th and be unable to perform at your best.
