2016 marks my 6th consecutive Decathlon and each year I am blown away by what the event has turned into. Multiple cities, over $6 million raised for a great cause, insane individual and team performances, professional athlete cameos - you can’t get any better than that.

I first heard of The Decathlon in late 2010 in a Bloomberg recap article describing the event. I thought to myself, “I’m in pretty decent shape, right? I can do this.” My only hesitation was the fundraising minimum. The most I had ever raised…

The New York Decathlon will be my 5th consecutive Decathlon. Many parts of my life have changed during this time, and with each year that I make that decision to register – I am also cognizant of the importance of reaching my fundraising goals. Transitioning from a firm with a thousand employees to one with four employees each year I have had to rethink my ability to raise even the bare minimum needed to qualify to compete.

The training has always been the fun part for me. I…

There’s no doubt that The Decathlon is full of obstacles. Ten of them to be exact, not counting the athletes you’re competing against. When I completed my first run-through of events, I could perform 1 dip, zero pull-ups, and 5 reps on the bench. I constantly wondered, “What have I gotten myself into?” I didn’t want to disappoint friends, family, and colleagues, all who had donated to this cause I am so passionate about. I came to call this theme of worrying the ‘fear of failing’ syndrome.

Sure, as…

I started competing in the Wall Street Decathlon two years ago. This will be my third competition and I hope that there will be many more. To borrow a line from a famous lyricist (with some modification): “Business and sports are so synonymous, we want to be them and they want to be us”. The Decathlon brings both worlds together seamlessly and the synergies are remarkable. Athletes and Wall Street have long been synonymous and make a good pair. The duo is improved when you add philanthropy to…

2016 will mark my 4th consecutive Decathlon.  When I first arrived in 2013, I had this sense of bravado that I can compete with the best athletes on Wall Street, but that was quickly put to rest after seeing the amazing talent around me.  When I returned in 2014, I reset expectations. I aimed for a top-5 finish in the 30-39 age group. I had finished 9th in my age bracket in 2014, so a stretch goal of 5th didn't seem unreasonable. I trained incredibly hard, but come game day, things…

How The Decathlon Came to Life

a friendly bet among friends is now a nationwide phenomenon

Just over 8 years ago, I called a burgeoning star at money management firm, Lord Abbett & Co.  We had spent the better part of our lives bickering about who was a better athlete.  It’s a debate occurring frequently among friends, especially those who are athletic and competitive.  In fact, the debate was a consistent topic among a group of friends, not just the two us.

“Let’s settle this once and for all. We’ll have a decathlon this fall.”

He agreed and so, too…
