The 800 meter run is the last and longest event in The Decathlon. By the time you get to this tenth event you’re pretty tired and perhaps wondering how fast you really can run.

Just before the starter pistol for the 800m goes off, I think of the kids. The Decathlon magic for me switches into high gear. If the kids in the pediatric cancer ward can tough it out, then surely I can do the same. What I am about to do is nothing compared to what they do every day. I feed on their energy and determination and take off.

Somehow all the tiredness, soreness, and distance seems less important than running this race as fast as I possibly can. Just like those kids I am letting it all out and leaving it all on the track. For a short several minutes I can do anything for the kids to show them I am with them. Of course, the many other decathletes cheering me on is a big help, too. As are the volunteers, spectators and supporters who are shouting encouragement from the sidelines.

The last 50 meters are the best. That's the last chance to raise money and set records! That's why I come back every year - those last 50 meters and what giving it my all means for the kids.

Until next year’s Decathlon.

John
