$9,925,123…That’s the number that means something to me when I visit The Decathlon’s web page. Not personal or team stats. It’s this tremendous accomplishment by Dave, his team, and everyone who has participated and contributed to helping find a cure for Pediatric Cancer that inspires me. It’s a privilege to compete alongside the men and women of The D10 community and I take great pride in being able to use my athleticism to help make this number grow in the future.
From the moment I was introduced to the event, I was hooked. Fitness and Philanthropy? How could I not take part. Everyone’s life has in some way been touched by cancer. My father passed away from cancer when he was just 47 years of age. I was 17 and my brothers just 15 and 8. Now as a father myself to two young boys, Auden (14) and Harper (11) I strive to lead by example in health and helping to find a cure for this dreaded disease.
2017 was my second year participating in The D10. In 2016 I competed as an individual in the inaugural Houston D10. I didn’t know what to expect. I knew the events, checked out some scores of competitors in New York and online videos and it looked very well run and well supported. I was blown away when I took the field at Rice Stadium. The uniforms, volunteers, equipment set up, logistics, recovery support…Everything exceeded my expectations. It was an amazing day. But mostly, it was the community itself. A group of likeminded professionals competing alongside one another for a cause far greater than themselves. What also appealed to me was that The D10 is a great way to connect with other similar people. Those who also strive to balance work, family and various obligations with their own health and fitness. Having the opportunity to train alongside those people at the many training sessions organized by The D10 gave me something to look forward to and provide a little extra “motivation”.
This year I was fortunate enough to team up with my friend and training partner Reagan Buckley. He was the overall champ for 2016, whereas I was the Executive Champ (which is a really nice consolation prize considering I cant beat him…). We were joined by two amazing friends and female athletes Sarah Horsey; one of my trainers at ROW Studios and Aubrey Bagley an engineer and former D1 soccer player. We won the Team Championship but more importantly raised over 11k and I’m grateful for all the support we received. It was a hot day and my wife and boys were there to support us all. They stayed for all 10 events and I recall thinking about not running the 800m final event; our team didn’t really need me to do it but then I thought about how lucky I am to have healthy children who can come out and watch me and that those we are competing for are not as fortunate and no matter how hot or tired I was, I am physically able to get around that track and no matter what my time was going to be, just get out there, be grateful and lead by example.
I truly appreciate The D10 for giving me the opportunity to be a part of it’s community and look forward to many more D10’s in the future, watching those donations grow and ultimately finding a cure for cancer.
