Admiring the growth of the D10 over the years, I am proud to be competing for my sixth time. The first five I competed in New York City and this year in San Francisco. Less than a month shy of my 53rd birthday, the event this year means a lot to me as it will probably be my last. In March, I was feeling amazing and fully primed for the New York D10. The tweak in my shoulder and pec alarmed me just a bit and I plowed through the pain for a week. Then the unthinkable happened, my upper body broke down completely and I could not do a rep of bench press, a dip or a pull-up.

Back in 2012, I thought the NYC event would be a great way to get back in shape and I galvanized around the fundraising for a truly great cause; the Sloan Kettering Pediatric Cancer Center. Training and competing for this great event not only transformed my body but focused me on the bigger picture in life and getting involved in an important and underfunded cause. As I aged and grayed each year, amazingly, I improved on my main performance goals and importantly continued to meet my modest fundraising totals. Now six years in, and my generous family, friends and co-workers have supported me in raising over $25k for Sloan Kettering and this year in the San Francisco area, the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

The pain continued through April, May and even into June as I volunteered for the NYC event. At that point, even though I could not do any of my core exercises, I still believed I would recover in time for October in San Francisco. Thankfully, I began to mend and regain my strength. While I definitely will not impress anyone in the running based events, I am confident that I can continue to perform at a high level on the bench press, dip and pull-up bars to most likely end my career as a D10 participant on a high note.

To say that I am honored to be affiliated with this incredible organization would be a huge understatement. As the father of three daughters, I advocate proudly close to $10 mil raised across the country for a cause that directly supports pediatric cancer research.
