Meet the Decathletes: Joel Rosenberg
May 28, 2015
1. Please tell us the name of your firm, title, and describe your role in one sentence. I was brought in too the event by my teammate JP Witkop who works as a research analyst in the industry. I am a recent college grad currently seeking a job in the industry.
2. What are your fundraising and athletic goals for The Decathlon, and what led you to choose them? Myself and my team members wanted to be as realistic as possible, therefore we as a team setup a goal to come up with $10,000. And we are happy to say we are halfway to our set goal. Hopefully we can exceed our expectations!
As for our athletic goals, we looked at results from last years decathlon and we think that we have a good chance to be in the top section of most of the events. Thats what we are aiming for, and we have a very all-round trained team that posses a great deal of strength, explosiveness and endurance that can accomplish that.
3. On average, a Decathlete receives donations from 34 supporters. What fundraising technique(s) have worked best for you that you would recommend? We created a video which has had good response. We have also been reaching out to family and friends that have helped us spreading the word. We also reached out to our athletic department of our college that Paul, JP and myself have all attended and had them write an article about our team and the cause of this event.
4. Most Decathletes have participated in mud runs, 5k’s, and triathlons. What differentiates The Wall Street Decathlon experience from those other events? The mud run 5k's and triathlons are all events you have to prove a great deal of conditioning.
The Wall Street Decathlon is a mix of events where you have to prove strength, endurance and explosiveness. Therefore you need to approach your training in a different way. You as a participant have to show a great deal of mental toughness as well. I also like the idea with having 1/3 of your scored being based on how much money you can raise.
5. What's the one thing about The Decathlon you are most looking forward to, or excited about? Im very excited to show up at the Decathlon and compete, and I'm looking forward to see how far all the hours of hard work can take us. I'm also expecting a great atmosphere where a lot of people coming together to compete for a good cause.
6. When (and how) do you typically train - before, during, or after work? Since I'm not yet in the workforce, I can workout any hour of the day. However, I like to wake up early in the morning to keep a good routine. That will give me the rest of the day to do meaningful things such as applying to jobs.
6. Decathletes are motivated by the cause, the competition, and the camaraderie. What inspirational quote -- not from Anchorman -- motivates you? "Wake up with determination, go to bed with satisfaction." I think that quote is said by an author named George Lorimer.
