MEET THE DECATHLETES
August 28, 2014
Athlete: Michael Bennett
- Describe your role at J.P. Morgan? I am an Investment Specialist based in New York City for J.P. Morgan Private Bank, which delivers customized wealth management advice and solutions to wealthy individuals and their families. My team focuses on implementing investment solutions for our clients across a broad range of asset classes.
- How did you train for the event? I focused on event specific training and tried to incorporate a range of activities into my workouts. I ran track in high school and played football in college – the Decathlon required training and focus that was similar to my prior experience in these athletic endeavors. For the weightlifting related events, I focused on high repetition work while still trying to build strength. For the running portion, I trained with Jerry Macari’s running club (Urban Athletics, NYC) and focused on sprint work as well as intermediate distance running.
- Best memory(ies) from participating in The Decathlon? I have two distinct memories from The Decathlon: first was hearing from Dr. Tanya Trippett on how the money we raised was directly benefitting the programs at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The second memory was the instant camaraderie built amongst a group of relative strangers on the day of the competition. Everyone was competing but working together at the same time for a good cause.
- Advice to new participants? Do not underestimate the generosity of family, friends, co-workers, or anyone else that is a potential donor. Make people aware of how hard you are working and training for this event and keep them involved and informed on your training, goals, and progress. People are generally willing to donate and this great cause makes it all the easier to raise money. From a training stand point, be ready for everything and do not skip on anything. For areas of weakness, find a group or some friends to train with. Nothing great was ever accomplished alone.
- What are your goals for The Decathlon 2015? In 2014 I raised $5,000 and came in 7th place overall. For 2015, my goals are simple: be a part of the $10K Club and win the overall competition.
Thanks, Michael. Good luck!
